Fresh out of the Workshop: the custom MavenMini Earflap hat Part II

so here it is!! the final product from our custom order mentioned in this post.  i just love the gradation of purples!!  it is sooo adorable!  i hope it makes the little girl who wears it just as happy as it made me to make it! :) i really enjoyed making it in these saturated purples cuz we totally think that pastels for baby are a thing of the past!  the best thing is that this brightly colored yarn is machine washable (a very important feature for crocheted/knitted items) so it makes it extra functional for new parents!  hmmm... i might have to make a hat for myself in this colorway! lol

p.s MavenMini items range from hats, blankets, cocoons, booties, headbands, mittens. and more  for boys and girls!!

Mani Pedi: Sally Hansen Wishnets

Yep I'm still on the Sally Hansen Salon Effects bandwagon, and I wanted to show off this mani from a couple of weeks ago... it was an unusually inexpensive find. Why? Because these little pretties were released for Halloween and considered limited edition. I did a double take...I was already a big fan of the popular Misbehaved design, and these are a more festive version (see how I wore them here.) I didn't get any "spooky" vibes off them even after wearing them for a week. So- if you can find them on sale like I did ($3.99 at Duane Reade) lucky you, and enjoy! Wishnets are a poppy red with a black fishnet overlay; perfect for a bright pop of color on your nails. And the long-lasting results of the Salon Effects strips keeps me coming back for more.

P.S. Mondays can be flat-out difficult. Sometimes a little motivation and inspiration is all it takes to push you on through...if you haven't read Sesheta's post- do it. Hope it does the same for you as it did for me!

PFM Confessional: sesheta speaks...transformation

~ poem on back of card ~

gather sisters, brothers, seekers and friends
in sacred circle where this world ends
between the worlds let us pray and sing
and wait for visions Great Spirit will bring

photo and poem courtesy of New Moon Visions

i have been a fan of the artist Mara Berendt Friedman for years.  i used to find her cards at East West bookstore in the village years ago.  i love her female centered images and community focused messages.  when i need an image that inspires a certain frame of mind i'm in, her artwork is first to come to mind.

this image is entitled, "Green Butterfly of Transformation".  i have been thinking about transformation a lot lately.  it's hard not to crave change when life seems to be hard for so many different people.  it has me concerned that a better way isn't directly in sight.  this is what has me thinking... what if life doesn't get easier?  my minor complaints are so trivial when i look at the situations of others but it is definitely all relative.  life is just hard.  ... so if life is focused on being hard, i have realized that my job is to be focused on enjoying (despite it all) more.  i feel like it is totally now or never.  if i don't make an effort now, maybe i never will.  i have no guarantee that my efforts will succeed or fail but, either way, at least i can have one heck of a ride to share with the generations to come after me.

getting stuck in the muck and mire of life can cause temporary amnesia; it causes us to forget that we don't have to stay there.  we have been blessed with the choice to do something different even if it is only in some small way.  i didn't really think i had any new year resolutions for 2012 but now i think otherwise.  my goal is to enjoy life and be re-inspired by her beauty.  i'm really looking forward to the new perspective this will all bring!

Daily Outfit: Russian Prep

This is an unexpected pairing... those can end up surprising me by being my favorite looks! I'm not usually drawn to preppy pieces, but this traditional blackwatch blazer was calling my name. With a (silent) shout-out to my Russian heritage, the look became a mix of fur, lace, and plaid wool. Just what I needed to beat that cold chill in the air. If only I was sipping tea while strolling NYC instead of spending the day at work...but I digress. Can't wait to wear this blazer at night with coated denim and some serious chunky chain necklaces for a more edgy twist.

PFMs Do It Better: Seductive Brown Eyes

Seductive Brown
the inspiration

the tools

5. the blush!  how could i forget!!

my version
seductively brown eyes

my new fave lip color

i am a novice make-up artist.  i've been doing my own make-up since the days i used to perform in musicals as a little girl.  at age 9, i had no idea how valuable these skills would be for me now.  i love looking at a make-up look and trying to recreate it and now i'm sharing my experimentation with you!

step 1. the inspiration "Seductively Brown" (pic.1)-  while perusing the Make Up For Ever site, i came upon this look which was super sexy and seemed easy to replicate.

step 2. the tools (pic. 2) - i gathered my tools of the trade to begin playing.  though i don't have the palette that was on their site, i used what i had in my collection to help me achieve the look.
  1.  after applying concealer and foundation to my face, i primed my eyes using the Urban Decay primer that came along with my NAKED eyeshadow collection (did we mention that there is a NAKED 2 collection??!! but i digress...).  then, i applied DARKHORSE to my eye lids.    i used BUCK in the creases.  i also used VIRGIN just under my eye brow and then used NAKED between VIRGIN and BUCK to assist with blending.  the Make Up For Ever steps suggested blending color under the eye also, but, since i was wearing this look for day, i left this step out.
  2. i used a dark brown eyeliner, like this MAC eyeliner in coffee, to line my bottom lashes.  I then smudged the color to get that smoky look.
  3. i applied my tried and true Maybelline Great Lash mascara in Brownish Black on both my upper and lower lashes.
  4. then i added Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense lip color #39, described as a orange coral, on my lips.  LOVE this nude color!! so chic with just about any look!
  5. i forgot to add this staple to my tools pic!! i use this Lorac bronzer/blush duo almost every day!! it is the perfect light color to compliment the dark eyes and nude lip.
step 3. choose an outfit to compliment your face- this was the first time i decided my make-up look before i knew what i wanted to wear!  goes to show, inspiration is inspiration - no matter the form.  i thought my (borrowed) fedora and edgy chain earrings worked well to compliment my smoky eye!

Ta-da! seductive brown!!  can't wait to try this on a night out on the town!

PFMs in the Kitchen: Spinach Spaghetti'n Brussels Sprout Delight

Deliciousness
I was always a veggie-lover but when I first discovered brussels sprouts I was hooked, no turning back...popping them left and right, hot or cold. I want to share my obsession with these lil round nuggets and convert all you haters one by one. First non-believer was my husband (who tells me brussels sprouts are NOT candy, but I'm still skeptical.) He agreed to give them another try cooked the right way- nicely golden and crusty. This dish was a hit! Feel free to make it without the pasta too, it would be a delicious side.
Lemon'n Leaf
Ingredients: 12 oz. Spinach Spaghetti (I use De Cecco Pasta)
20-25 small brussels sprouts
2-3 garlic cloves, sliced
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (plus more for rubbing)
Juice of 1/2 Lemon
Sea Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup grated Cheddar or Gouda cheese (I use the Cabot Cheddar)
Optional toppings: Sliced organic avocado, 1/4 cup walnut halves

Directions: Bring a large pot of water to a boil (and salt it.) Wash and trim the stem ends of the brussels sprouts and remove any sad looking leaves. Cut in half from stem to top, trying to keep the leaves intact. Put a bit of olive oil in a dish and gently rub each half in the olive oil. Heat 2 tbsp of olive oil in your largest skillet over medium heat, careful not to overheat. Place brussels sprouts in pan flat side down and sprinkle with a few pinches of salt. Cover & cook for about 5 minutes, then check to see if they are browned. If not, cover and cook another few minutes.
Meanwhile, cook the pasta and drain, reserving 1/3 cup of the cooking water.  Now the brussels sprouts should be tender (test them by cutting into one), so turn up the heat, add the lemon juice and garlic and cook until the flat sides are a deep brown and caramelizing. Toss them to make sure the rounded sides get a little browning too. Using tongs, add your spaghetti to the skillet with the bit of reserved pasta water. Keep cooking/deglazing/tossing over moderate heat, until the water is nearly absorbed. Add another 2 tablespoons of olive oil to taste. Add a generous amount of black pepper and sprinkle with sea salt.
Remove from heat and stir in the 1/2 cup of grated cheese (tongs work well for this.) Serve the pasta in deep bowls, and don't forget about your optional toppings! Makes 4 servings.

Tip: I reheated it the next day for lunch and added in slices of ripe avocado- so good! Walnuts would be a yummy topping also. Make the dish vegan by eliminating the cheese, but if you are indulging you have to try the Cabot Hand-Rubbed Tuscan Cheddar. I love the coating of herbs and spices. A Gouda would also do the trick for dinner on a cold winter night. The pics will be better in next recipe, promise.

Mani Pedi: Essie Going Incognito

when i saw this color on my cousin, i thought to myself, "if it looks good on her, maybe it will look good on me!"  well, i'm so glad my little cuz gave me inspiration because it was definitely a new adventure wearing Essie's Going Incognito.  i felt like i should be out on a safari or hiding in the forest somewhere lol.  i never thought that i would enjoy this shade of green on my nails but i did!  it is the perfect shade between forest and army green.   it is a funky take on a neutral.  i was also surprised at how well it complimented many of my outfits.  the verdict?  i will totally wear this shade again!!

Fresh Out of the Workshop: The Divine Turban Headband

This latest design came to be out of the desire for a stylish, vintage-inspired accessory that would keep ears warm and hairstyles in tact. Since I tried to shop vintage and couldn't find exactly what I wanted, it was time to create a la MavenFresh. Ta-da, introducing the Divine Turban Headband! It's cut wide and made of a lusciously soft fuzzy blend of mohair, alpaca, cashmere, and wool. So it's totally indulgent, and you deserve it. Turbans are taking on many different forms these days, but can they get you through cold-weather months in high-fashion style like this one can?!! Keep in mind this is not just a piece for outdoor wear; put on a blouse and some shiny jewelry and you're perfection at the office. If you're going to be prancing outside in the chilly air, pair it with a cocoon coat...this turban is divine!

I'm such a hat girl and this just adds to my growing number of toppers. And now you can get a head start on building up your own collection. This will be available in more colors, just click here and visit our etsy shop. You know you want to.

Daily Outfit: Tribal Turquoise

like my girl Becca, i am definitely a fan of wearing shorts and tights.  unfortunately, i have yet to bring this trend into my winter wardrobe.  these pics were taken back when the weather was milder and when it was the time i would even consider wearing tights outside.  (it's no secret that i do not like the cold.  i can usually be found wearing tights and leggings for warmth lol.)  anyways, these shorts were a fab find at Forever 21.  i love their pattern.  it brings a tribal feel to an otherwise sweet girl look.  i paired the shorts with my ruffle shirt and turquoise lightcatchers just to keep the mix of tribal/sweet going.  i would love to update my wardrobe so i can continue the trend as the weather drops more and more, but i just haven't found the right pair of shorts yet!  i guess i have to go back and read Becca's post for shopping inspiration!!

Daily Outfit: Downtown Fun

Just having a little fun with printed tights, floaty chiffon, and touches of gold. This jacket is a menswear-inspired classic that can be worn so many different ways, but I like it best paired with girly pieces. And it's a great thing when your man couldn't care less if you borrow a sweater (or two, shhhh!)

It's a snowy slushy Sunday here, and I'm loving the chance to stay inside and get some things done. So far I uploaded pics from a vacation that we went on- back in May 2011. Nice right? Hoping to have time to make some guacamole for snacking...yum. How are you spending the day?

PFMs Music Corner: Mylo Xyloto - Coldplay

Mylo Xyloto

about two months ago, i was talking with a friend who mentioned that Coldplay had a new album out.  i was totally shocked because I hadn't heard anything about it.  while i wouldn't consider myself a die hard fan, i do really enjoy their music.  i was late to get on the bandwagon but, never-the-less, i consider myself a fan.  i really like their A Rush of Blood to the Head and X & Y albums, but this new album, Mylo Xyloto (pronounced my-lo zy-letoe) may be my new fave.  each of their albums have different vibes going on and, to me, this album exudes success.  it seems obvious that they are group with a lot of experience under their belt.  the more i listen to the album, i find a new favorite song.  first it was Paradise but now i really love Charlie Brown.  i'm so glad that my friend put me on to the new album!  i saw her the other day and she (a true blue fan) told me that, in an effort to get the best seat possible, ended up buying three sets of tickets to their August show at MSG.  she offered to sell me a pair... i am really considering taking her up on it!

now i'm off to watch SNL because Becca just let me know that episode when Coldplay was the musical guest is about to replay!

toodles!

PFMs Do It Better: Getting Carrie Bradshaw Waves

It's no secret to anyone that knows me...I love Carrie Bradshaw and her signature hairstyles. One of my faves that's so easy to recreate is her big messy waves (hair-did here and here.) Best part? Whether your hair is fine, thick, frizzy, or pin straight- you don't have to master a curling iron to own this style!

1. After showering I prep with two pumps of Pantene Split End Repair in my palms, and work it into my damp hair starting at the ends. It works wonders. I stop halfway up...and there's no need to comb it through.

2. Then I spray Bumble & Bumble Styling Lotion with abandon, concentrating at roots. Blow dry with a diffuser, while lightly scrunching. This styling spray gives you soft volume and adds to the textured-piecey-disheveled look that we are going for. Try to keep ends free of product for more movement.

3. Once hair is dry, the real action begins. I was a loyal curling iron fan until my hairstylist turned me on to the Hot Tools Deep Waver and now it's become an addiction. This is one purchase that you will never regret! My hair is thick so I like to adjust the heat setting under 400 degrees and section my hair half-up before making waves.  Just clip the top layer of your hair up in a loose bun and start underneath. We are going for deep beautiful waves...grab (approx) 2 inch section of hair and start several inches down from your roots with the first clamp. Repeat. Repeat again, if you're hair is at all on the longer side like me. Three clamps per section is my motto. Keep going till your entire head is full of waves! If you have bangs- play with what you like best. Most times I just blow dry them straight, but if I'm in between bang trims I've been known to clamp 'em!

4. I love CHI especially in the winter time when my hair is dry. So put a tiny pea-size amount in your palms, and smooth onto hair. You can play with this to get rid of flyaways, add shine, or run your fingers through sections to define. If you have fine hair, take care to use less of this product.

5. My secret weapon for volume- Graham Webb Thick Infusion Weightless Body Spray. Spray it (a little goes a long way) around the roots/crown of your head till about half-way down. We are going for lift, volume, and thickness here ladies...just like the name says. This stuff delivers. Using hands, gently push up at ends of hair a couple of times so that you have lift from roots to tips. Think fluffy.

6. Then grab your teasing/lifting comb. I like the inexpensive Conair comb, and using the metal teeth I pick up and lift wherever volume is needed. Focus the action around the top of your head where we just sprayed in step #5.  Now if you are in the mood for Glamorous Soft Wave Carrie...gently brush out your waves. If you would rather do Chic Textured Wave Carrie (very me!) leave as is.

7. Finish it off with Sebastian Shaper Zero Gravity Hairspray. It's brushable and touchable, but still adds control...yay!!!!!!!!

Hope you enjoy your waves for days!

xoxo Becca

Fresh out of the Workshop: the custom MavenMini Earflap hat

my youngest modeling an earflap hat

i'd buy whatever he was selling lol

though our blog focuses mainly on jewelry and accessories for women, i'm not sure if all of you know that we also have a line for children called MavenMini.  these items are usually crocheted goodies for babies, toddlers and older kids.  there was a time that the demand for our MavenMini items had us wondering if we should be doing primarily children's items!! then we realized that we wouldn't have any fun stuff for us to wear! lol  either way, our MavenMini stuff can be the most fun to make.  why? cause everything is cuter in small sizes!!

today's post is about a custom order that we just received today for an infant (girl) earflap hat.  i couldn't resist the chance to post the above pics of my little one modeling a boy version of the hat.  like i said, this order is for a baby girl.  one of our loyal clients requested that it be made in purples (yay!).  off Becca and i went in search of the perfect yarn.  we were lucky and found exactly what we were looking for... so now it's time to create!  i can't wait to see the end results!! stay tuned to see how it turns out!

p.s.  i've renamed "Hot out of the Workshop" to "FRESH out of the Workshop" because, duh, that makes sooo much more sense!!!  hope you agree!

Mani Pedi: OPI The It Color

I'm that girl who loves searching for the "it" pair of jeans or the "it" leather jacket, so it only seems natural that the same effort should be put into finding the "it" nail color. Much like my fellow "it" girl Sesheta, I have a thing for bold nail color... and when she gifted me with this amazing nail polish, I couldn't wait to put it on! The rich yellow is so fabulous...think mustard but brighter, and with a touch of gold. Some might say it's a little much for every day wear, but for me it's so perfect. It feels high fashion and mod, just what I need to brighten up my winter days. I only wish it lasted longer, but isn't that what we all demand from our nail polish? Let's make it happen ladies! What are your tried and true tips and products for making your manicures last longer?

Daily Outfit: Purple Sequin Dream

what's better than sequins? four different color sequins!! when i got this really cute shirt  from my mom, i wanted to wear it right away! the fact that it is also purple (my fave color) makes this shirt even sweeter.  it was also the perfect reason to whip out my purple tulle bow. the purple is a necessary splash of color to my dark-hued palette.  did you notice anything else about this outfit?  lol, today i am also rocking my tried and true North Face jacket because it was FREEZING outside!! i've already told Becca that if i am gonna take pics outside, my coat will be a regular feature with every outfit! HA! i may be a die hard fashionista, but i refuse to be cold!

ciao, for now!! xo

Daily Outfit: Maroon & Charcoal

I remember buying this jersey dress years ago and thinking "oooh I will definitely get lots of use out of this." Ok so I tell myself that A LOT which is why I end up with a closet full of items that I wear once and then sell on eBay. But...this time that I was totally right. Not only does it have a classic shape, but the deep maroon color adds life to my winter wardrobe (and I love it paired with blacks and greys!) I decided the dress needed a dose of menswear chic, so I grabbed my grey-leather boots that have oxford detailing and layered on a charcoal blazer and my trusty trilby. Finished the look with some feminine necklaces...I especially love this vintage filigree timepiece necklace that my Mimi gave to me. It doesn't keep time, but it sure adds style.
